  • The Nutcracker
    No need to fly to London to enjoy the Royal Opera or the Royal Ballet. 12 productions of excellence and extraordinary casts for the new season (2017-2018) of the Royal Opera House, live from London to the cinema in Como. This year repertoire of the Royal Opera and the Royal Ballet includes many classics and four new live productions broadcast live by Covent Garden via satellite.   • The man who fell to earth
    Tribute to David Bowie with the movie "The man who fell to earth" by Nicolas Roeg. An alien, who adopts the name Thomas Jerome Newton, arrives on Earth and quickly sets about creating enough wealth to allow him to return to his own world. His home world is portrayed as a vast arid land where water is at a premium. With the help of patent lawyer Oliver Farnsworth - who later becomes the CEO of Newton's holding company, World Enterprises - he has a number of original patents that make him very rich. Along the way he meets a number of interesting characters, including Mary-Lou, who falls in love with him and Nathan Brice who works for him. The question of course is whether Newton will ever get to return home.   • 110° Giro di Lombardia
    110° EDITION COMO-BERGAMO The 110th edition of the end of season Monument Classic, scheduled for Saturday 1st October, includes many of international cycling’s most prominent names in its entry list. The course, from Como to Bergamo, is challenging, with a finale featuring two new climbs. Alberto Contador, Fabio Aru, Joaquim Rodriguez, Philippe Gilbert, Esteban Chaves, Bauke Mollema, Daniel Martin, Rigoberto Uran, Tim Wellens, Daniel Moreno, Wout Poels, Edvald Boasson Hagen, Steven Cummings, Romain Bardet, Jarlinson Pantano, Julian Alaphilippe, Giovanni Visconti and Diego Ulissi, are among the prominent names of the 25 teams which appear in the entry list of Il Lombardia NamedSport, on Saturday 1st October. The Monument Classic, organised by RCS Sport/La Gazzetta dello Sport, will start from Como and finish in Bergamo, on a very challenging course of 240km, featuring 4,400m of total elevation, and a finale presenting two climbs that have never been faced before in Il Lombardia.
  • Volta's Celebrations
    Volta's Celebrations On the occasion of the Alessandro Volta’s birth and death and of the invention of the Voltaic pile, there are events in Como that involve local institutions and associations to celebrate the genius that has always been very closely linked to Como and the lake. Some events have represented moments of impulse to create projects that have enriched the city with syhmbolic places, such as the Volta Temple, as well as an opportunity to host in the city great names of science and beyond. 1899: 100 years from the invention of the Voltaic Pile A large exhibition of Volta’s relics was organised to show in particular the scientific tools created and used by Volta. In July, a fire destroyed the first edition but, a few months later, the event was re-opened and there was the idea to create in the city a place worthy to host Volta’s heritage and rebuild the stages of scientific thought and his biography as future testimony.   • Prize
    The EPS Edison Volta European Prize for physics is for sure one of the most prestigious awards for physics in Europe. Promoted by the Alessandro Volta Foundation in Como, in partnership with Edison and the EPS European Physical Society, it places Como at the centre of the international scene with an initiative that seeks to strongly enhance scientific research and innovation. The prize represents a qualifying part of the great investment of the Volta Foundation on the theme of knowledge, to make Como and its territory an authoritative reference for prestigious universities, international research centres, scholars and researchers. Honour reward is given to individuals or groups of up to 3 people and consists of a cash prize of 10,000 euros plus a diploma and a medal. The EPS Edison Volta Prize collects the inheritance of the Francesco Somaini Prize for Physics, which was founded in 1953 in honour of Volta and represents one of the most prestigious awards of physics.
  • Cernobbio and “La Via dei Monti Lariani” (Lariani Mountain Trail)
    Cernobbio Cernobbio is a renowned tourist resort on the shores of the lake at the foot of Monte Bisbino. Along its banks there are some villas of rare beauty, including Villa d’Este and Villa Erba, which is now an exhibition centre, Villa Bernasconi and Villa Pizzo. It is reachable by boat or by taking a pleasant walk of around forty minutes: from the grounds of Villa Olmo, along the Kilometre of Knowledge, a green and cultural corridor of great natural beauty set in a unique landscape. The kilometre links the old parklands of the exceptionally beautiful historic mansions that overlook the lake, namely Villa Olmo, Villa del Grumello, and Villa Sucota. After the Kilometre of Knowledge the walk or cycle ride continues along the first limb of the eastern slopes of the lake. From Cernobbio you can proceed to the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin on the summit of Monte Bisbino, taking a scenic route that offers breath-taking views of the lake.   • Spina Verde
    Spina Verde Spina Verde Regional Park stretches along the hillcrests northwest of Como. It is an area with many interesting features, including the natural landscape itself, archaeological and historical sites, as well as many places of worship that include the Basilica of San Carpoforo, the church of San Rocco in Cavallasca and the cross of Sant’Eutichio. These are all indicative of how this has become a hub of religious culture. Spina Verde is criss-crossed by many trails. Thirteen of these were set up by the Park authority and provide many different kinds of routes. These may be natural, scenic, sporting, historical or religious, while some also take in the archaeological ruins of the proto-historic Como and the medieval Castel Baradello.   • Como Sud
    Como Sud “In Como Sud: un’esperienza tra Cultura e Natura” (Southern Como: an experience between Culture and Nature" is an initiative by circolo di Legambiente “A. Vassallo” in collabotion with assessorato alla Cultura del Comune di Como. Many associations and organizations participated in the project. The aim is to promote a specific territory in southern Como to make people aware of its cultural and natural resources, making it a place to spend time, relax and know more about Como. Therefore, a biligual brochure has been produced. Citizens and tourists have the opportunity to scan the QR code on the brochure and get more information about historical and cultural southern Como heritage to experience it in the most fruitful way. VILLA CANTALUPA Starting from “Ca’ d’Industria” (via Varesina 118, località Rebbio), it is possible to see Villa Cantalupa and its park, which contains an art masterpiece, a pendulum statue called “Perpetuum Mobile” by Emilio Alberti.
  • Rationalism
    Il Razionalismo The itinerary starts from Pinacoteca Civica, the municipal art gallery, where you can learn of the work of Como’s futurist Antonio Sant’Elia and see the works of the city’s abstract artists who are closely related to its rationalist culture. The route continues to Piazza del Popolo, home to Casa del Fascio, a masterpiece of Italian rationalism designed by Giuseppe Terragni in 1932 and completed in 1936. The building is now home to Guardia di Finanza, the tax enforcement force. Walking along the lakeside you can visit the “rationalist quarter”, between Viale Puecher and Viale Sinigaglia. The area was subject to architectural redevelopment that was important in terms of new materials used, as well as formally and in terms of the building models adopted for the constructions, with a very high priority being given to functionality. Straight on to Novocomum, a block of flats designed in 1927 by Terragni, with its presentation of walls and glass surfaces.
