Pinacoteca Civica
Paintings, sculptures and more
Pinacoteca Civica - Art Gallery of Como. Art from the Middle Ages to the 20th Century
Inaugurated in 1989 in the 17th-century Palazzo Volpi, the Pinacoteca (Art Gallery) houses the pictorial and sculptural works of the city’s heritage. The collection, which goes from the Middle Ages to contemporary times, was formed through bequests, donations, purchases and it documents the territory’s artwork from religious buildings, to portraiture, landscapes, genre painting, and then to 20th-century studies related to futurism, rationalism and design. The centrepieces of the collections are the 6th-century “Portraits of Illustrious Men” collection by Paolo Giovio, drawings by the futuristic architect Antonio Sant’Elia and some of the most major works by the Gruppo Como, the 20th-century “astrattisti comaschi” (a group of abstract artists from Como).
